Alfalfa forage yield, milk yield, and nutritive value under intensive cutting

Forage yield, nutritive value, and stand persistence are key metrics in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) management. The combination of cultivar improvement, longer growing seasons the Midwest, trends shorter rotations offer opportunity to reevaluate effects increasing cutting frequency (CF) on these metrics. We evaluated forage milk production, eight entries with fall dormancy (FD) ranging from two (FD2) five (FD5) under CF four (CF4), (CF5), or six (CF6) annual cuts during production years environments upper midwestern United States. Nutritive value kg–1 increased differed among entries. Cutting entry interactively influenced yield ha–1 yet optimal depended environment. At one environment, CF4 CF5 CF6 caused a 5 29% decrease ha–1, respectively. another had about 16% greater than CF6. reduced 3rd-year density especially severe for some Alfalfa FD was not correlated persistence, but an FD5 consistently those greatest at These results suggest that intensifying harvests per season cultivars can boost without negative environments.
